In the latest Undekhi web series, seeing is disbelieving. A crime is captured in a camera that has never taken place. The body, as well as the eyewitnesses, vanish into thin air. A police officer arrives on the crime scene and walks into a place of lies built out of a sense of entitlement. Undekhi web series by SonyLiv begins in Bengal and then moves on to Manali and Himachal Pradesh.
A forest officer dies in Sunderbans. A neck wound is suggestive that he has been killed by a wild animal, however, the slow-moving and fast thinking investigating officer Barun Ghosh played by Dibyendu Bhattacharya knows something more is there to the crime. The real jungle is situated far away in Manali where Daman Atwal featuring Ankur Rathee and Teji or Anchal Singh’s wedding is going on at a resort owned by Atwals.
Teji and her family are taken aback by the display at the wedding but they do not have any idea how loud and quiet things will get eventually. Teji’s to be father in law is always drunk and is an insensitive person in the Atwal family who keeps on getting close to some sibling dancers at a bachelor party. When Atwal played by Harsh Chhaya shoots one of the sisters the party pauses for some time and then continues.
The dancers can be disposed of but they are considered to be main suspects in Sunderbans case which is the reason why Barun is in Manali roaming around the place he does not belong to. This is one of the first forced connections in Undekhi. In the ten episodes, the crime drama brings together a range of scattered events and characters. Some of the force-fitting is apt for the show.
When he comes to realize that other dancers Koyal or Apeksha Porwal and her partner are being arrested he is like a hen in the middle of foxes. Rishi is an ideal eyewitness for the thriller. He has poor judgment, slow on uptake and is high strung. His boss Saloni played by Ayn Zoya does not help him either. She is under a debt which she hopes can be cleared by shooting the wedding she advises to keep his mouth shut.
As Rishi disappears, she makes dangerous deals with Atwal’s wicked nephew Rinku played by Surya Sharma.
Some of the parts of deal-making are meant to uncover Saloni’s self-serving methods while some it is an excuse for throwing in rough sex without which the shows fear that they will be incomplete. Rinku has more than bedroom skills. He is an inheritor of Atwal’s twisted value system. He does not blink when Atwal puts a hole in the dancer’s skull. Rinku’s actions make it appear that he is ticking off the items in a grocery list rather than covering a crime.
In contrast to foreign returned Daman who is terrified by his father’s behavior, Rinku regards it as his birthright. He is an expert at criminality and is unwavering at his attempts to stop Barun’s investigation, a characteristic trait that leads to games between the cop and the enforcer. Undekhi web series has been written and co-created by Sidharth Sengupta and directed by Ashish R Shukla.
The cynical and shard dialogue is by actor Varun Badola. The characters have many opportunists led by Atwal who show that a fish rots from the head down. Atwal’s debauchery sets for his clan reaction. He has no confusion hitting the bottle at any house and there are times where he cannot stand straight. This wealthy tycoon is capable of disposing of inconvenient bodies, bribery and covering his tracks which is closely followed by Rinku.
The family’s corrupt ways are way too infectious which is a problem for the Undekhi as well as some of the characters. As the stakes go high, a sense of panic drowns in for Atwals and their supporters. The show’s creators also have a bad reaction. The twists in the final episodes are completely inorganic from the main event as they are imposed on to keep the momentum in progress and give a crowd-pleasing conclusion.
Some characters are given too much screen time which is not required like Saloni and future bride Teji. Other characters who should be central to the plot like dancer Koyal are left out. Koyal’s tribal background has some stereotyping, especially in the scenes when she hunts in a forest by going through her jungle friendly ways. It is repeatedly said that nobody cares for Koel and her dead sister. Undekhi falls for this high-class sentiment as well.
Some of the well-performed and written characters are Surya Sharma as Rinku, Harsh Chhaya as Mr. Atwal and Ayn Zoya as Saloni. Chhaya delivers his lines and curses in an unintelligible and thick slur but his villainy cannot be doubted. Crime dramas are shown with police investigations cutting their way through the villainy.
Barun is out of the copybook, Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s layered and subtle performance humanizes the stereotype. He becomes calm and humorous to the ongoing chaos. Barun is a hero apt in the world filled with amorality. Undekhi benefits from this talented actor whose commitment to truth shows his character’s doggedness.
