Rabindranath Tagore revisited in Bollywood to bitter-sweet albeit insubstantial effect.

Darbaan is an adaptation of a short story by Rabindranath Tagore named ‘Khokababur Pratyabartan’ written in 1918. It is a story of an inseparable bond between the master and his caretaker. Darbaan Movie Review has a backdrop of Jharia in Dhanbad. It is the story of Naren Tripathi, a coal mine owner played by Harsh Chhaya’s son Anukul or Anu who shares a special bond with one of the trustable manservant Raicharan or Raichu played by Sharib Hashmi.

Darbaan takes us back to 1971, the year when coal mines were nationalized. Naren gets vastly affected by that and suffers losses which makes him leave the town and all the domestic helps. Raichu’s world begins and ends with Anu but they are separated in difficult times. After many years, Anukul who is grown up and has his own family asks Raicharan to take care of his son Siddhu.

Raicharan comes back to the duty smilingly leaving behind his wife Bhuri played by Rasika Duggal. Then, we see an unfortunate incident which changes everything. Raicharan is blamed when Anukul and Charul played by Flora Saini lose their son. Bipin Nadkarni is a National Award-winning director of various Marathi films and Darbaan marks his debut in Bollywood direction.

Radhika Anand, Rakesh Jadhav and Nadkarni have written the film jointly. They have proved the point that their application of the idea of human emotions is outstanding. The screenplay is one of the strongest points of the film and the sense of guilt which stays with Raicharan’ character is felt throughout by the audiences.

Annu Kapoor’s narration gives a great value to the relationship which becomes an obsession between Raicharan and his Chote Sahab. All the songs in Darbaan are very melodious. Besides that, the background music by Rohhan Patel is also in sync with the narrative. All the elements of the film are good but its pace is a bit disappointing.

Sharib Hashmi gives a great performance as a domestic worker who is always loyal to his master. The sequences where he breaks down makes us feel the pain he is going through as Raicharan. Sharad Kelkar is good as usual. With a limited screen time, Rasika Duggal makes her presence felt in the movie. Flora Saini and Harsh Chhaya help in pushing the narrative further.

The movie is a unique story of friendship, loyalty, sacrifice and caregiving with powerful performances making it a great tale. It can be binged watched by all. All said and done, we have compiled Darbaan movie ratings from various sources for your convenience.
