he story of Angrezi Medium starts from Champak played by Irrfan Khan who lives in Udaipur and keeps on arguing with his brother Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal). He is loving and caring for his daughter Tarika (Radhika Madan) who is about to clear 12th and is keen to start another academic journey.
She is very much different from her father and wants to explore the world outside the place she has lived all her life. Champak gives in to his daughter’s demands of studying abroad without knowing the consequences. Things start going out of hand when they have to pay heavy fees.
Champak is a determined father and vows that he will send his daughter to study abroad at any cost and from here starts the unconditional love journey of father and daughter. The movie mainly shows the obsession of modern kids to study further in foreign countries and their parents struggle to send them abroad. There are many other themes as well in the movie but this is the primary theme focused in the movie.
Irrfan Khan was going through treatment while shooting for the movie. But if you put the thought aside and see him you can feel him in every way. You laugh with him, cry with him and become emotional when he is unhappy. He has pulled off the character of Champak very well that no one else could have done.
Deepak Dobriyal supports him aptly in the role of a brother. His conversation with Irrfan shows that both of them are well-prepared and polished actors. Radhika Madan as a rebellious teenager pulls off her role very well especially in the emotional scenes where the story between her and her father opens up. They have played their characters so well that people start relating to them.
Kiku Sharda who is the childhood friend of both the brothers is in his usual funny avatar. Balakrishna Bobby Tripathy played by Ranvir Shorey is a catalyst for moving the plot of the story. He is shown as someone who has fulfilled his NRI dream. There is a twist in the plot with Shorey’s entry who plays his role perfectly.
Kareena Kapoor Khan appears briefly in the role of London cop Naina and adds to the confusion of the plot. Her relationship with her father Mrs. Kohli played by Dimple Kapadia is not explored in detail.
The music of the movie works well with two different cities i.e. London and Udaipur. The small-town qualities have been beautifully shown in a few scenes as the story moves. The characters have a thick local accent which sets the mood of the movie.
The first half of the movie is better than the second half and the story goes out of the wind when too many subplots are being fit into the story. There are many fantastic scenes in the movie and a few conversations between characters are highlights of the plot. The story is not very convenient and is filled with inconsistencies that cannot be ignored. However, Irrfan’s performance makes the movie worth a watch.
The movie does lose its grip on various occasions but it does not lose the emotions its trying to show nor the message it has to convey.
