A small step can go a long way in reducing the challenges which are faced by corona warriors during the period of crisis. Actress Dia Mirza had shared a video on Instagram which was recorded by her last year on the World Environment Day in which she has discussed the importance of composting and managing kitchen waste.
In the post, Dia has said, “Segregation of waste and composting wet waste or kitchen waste (vegetable and fruit peels, leftovers from pots, pans and plates, tea leaves, basically anything that grows from the earth can go back to the earth) as a daily practice is a wonderful contribution towards our society and environment. Consider this, our civic body continues to work to collect our waste and dispose of it responsibly even during this pandemic. Wouldn’t you want to take the opportunity to use this time at home and put into practice reducing the waste we create? This simple daily action will not only help reduce the burden on our civic workers but would also help combat air, land and sea pollution.”
If you do not have any idea of composting, here are the few tips which you can follow given by Tammnah Sharma, a sustainability expert.
Label your medicinal waste ranging from medicines to used masks and gloves and inform the garbage collector about the same.
You can put vegetable peels directly in a potted plant if they are less in quantity. Nature will decompose it on its own afterwards.
If you are composting cooked vegetables which are old and extra pour it in a sieve and wash it properly. The spices and oil will go off after washing. They can be composted in an earthen pot later on. Oil and salt attracts many insects which causes various problems.
Green waste generates nitrogen whereas brown waste generates carbon dioxide. You have to add soil and dry leaves in an earthen pot and put all the waste except meat, bones or vegetables which have salt or oil and cover with soil and dry leaves. This can be left aside.
Once the garbage is collected from all households, a bag of mixed waste can contain biodegradables which will not only smell awful but also ruin recycling of pulp-based waste. It is important to separate the waste – one with wet waste, one with dry waste and final with medical waste.
