Kabhi ‘ROFL’ Kabhi ‘Boredom’!

Wakaalat from Home is the latest offering from Amazon Prime Video which brings all the struggles in the forefront and leaves us laughing with a new normal life during coronavirus lockdown.

It provides a much needed comic relief from other dark, thrilling and layered web series which have dominated the platform from past few months. The show is a courtroom drama true to its name which shows divorce proceedings of a couple, Sujin played by Sumit Vyas and Radhika played by Nidhi Singh over video conferencing due to nationwide lockdown. They have been given a person for settling their differences and disputes, Rajni featuring Kubbra Sait who is also a lawyer of Sujin.

Lobo Tripathi played by Gopal Datt is the lawyer of Radhika. There is a flat in Bandra which is the root cause of the argument and mysterious Shilpi and Shrestha whom we can only hear and feel but cannot see. We meet all the four lead characters with their books, plants, air conditioners and pets as the settling starts from their respective homes. The line har ghar kuch kehta hai from an ad film is very much relevant in the scenario.

We go deep into the hearts and homes of four people and this is where the fun starts. The dialogues and situations are cut out of real-life and keep you hooked from the beginning. It is similar to watching a short version of life in lockdown.

It can be lawyer Rajni who is also feeding her cat while providing evidence against Radhika or Sujin sitting in his banyan or Tripathi having a bowl of prawns while listening to the proceedings. These things have become normal for most of the people as they have a life where work from home is an utmost necessity.

Over these ten episodes, we are drawn to the married life of Sujin and Radhika who have been together for nine years. Sujin is an actor who sets his hair every time he sees his photo and Radhika believes that facts have two sides and an alternative method as she is a journalist with Desh TV.

The series is uplifted in a must-watch category due to its digging at WhatsApp forwards, current political situation and trending people like Arnab Goswami, Amit Shah and Kunal Kamra making an appearance. It shows how life has changed due to pandemic. Director Rohan Sippy and writer Anuvab Pal have mixed jokes about ventilators which the country has to what defines thaali banging and essential services and none of these punches look forced.

Nobody is spared and Bollywood is a place where everyone will go to especially Ranveer Singh, Chunky Pandey, Ananya Pandey, Nawazzuddin Siddiqui and Neena Gupta are punchlines for outstanding jokes. The laughter does not stop and it never becomes too heavy and burdensome. If you have missed what happened in the last six months due to any reason, Wakaalat from Home will help you in doing a thorough revision of the same.

The narrative gets a bit dark when the lawyers team up and decide to cheat their clients but it works somehow. There are few jokes which are not eligible for children so it is not ideal to watch with family. It can be watched with the siblings or sitting alone in the room. The series has been shot at respective homes of the actors where they have taken the responsibility of camera work which does not look blurred.
