We have witnessed many pakhandi babas in masala movies. They did everything apart from religious practice and preachings. The babas and their mannerisms slowly vanished. Prakash Jha’s Aashram web series shows us an ungodly godman who is clean from the outside but rotten from inside.

However, Baba Nirala played by Bobby Deol is a new age baba who surrounds himself with all the modern facilities including shiny SUVs, different staff and sevadars, an ashram which is spread in many acres and an increasing flock of people for his daily darshan. All the nine episodes of Aashram web series last for an hour or so and Jha raises many issues like casteism and classism and its effect on the society.

The sharpest discrimination is shown in the beginning of a Dalit girl Pammi who is unfairly outdone in a local competition. The savarna rival is made to win then comes a flashpoint which leads Pammi and her brother to the police station. Then we see a massive and fortress-like ashram of the baba mentioned above.

After some time, we entered the ashram. There we see many shady dealings of ashram. His associate played by Chandan Roy Sanyal also guides him through the path. The greedy politicians, a bunch of missing girls, skeleton discovery, elegant doctor, increasing pile of bodies, a loyal cop played by Darshan Kumar and his loyal colleague Vikram Kochchar gives a pace to the story with all the inside details which keeps us glued to the series.

Deol enjoys himself and sounds like his brother Sunny in the web series. Ashram by far is Bobby Deol’s best performance till date. Sanyal roams around as baba’s messenger with a smirk on his face. Pammi played by Aaditi Pohankar is a believable character just like her brother Satti featuring Tushar Pandey and as long as the focus is on these two characters the series is very interesting.

Aashram web series is a decent watch with nice performances but leaves you wishing for more. The second part of the series will be released shortly. It is yet to be seen whether the second part will bring back the sharp social comment with swift storytelling, a forte in which Prakash Jha is an expert.
