Why the glamour and the glory of gambling is becoming a popular theme in Bollywood

gambling in bollywood

Despite being a legally contested topic in India, gambling is a very popular theme in Bollywood, and it is being used again and again as the backdrop for exciting Bollywood drama movies.

Well, the reason behind the growing popularity of gambling is fairly obvious – take a look at one of the latest gambling related Bollywood movies: Teen Patti. This hugely popular Indian movie showcases the glamour and the excitement of the casino world.

In the onset of the movie, the main character known as Professor Venkat is seen playing online teen patti to experiment on his theory of probability.

Professor Venkat decides to prove the worth of his experiments to his peers by entering the gambling world. Along with a few of his students he takes a shot at the theory of probability by applying it in real life casinos.

But Teen Patti doesn’t only show the glamour and the glory of gambling; it also shows us the underbelly of gambling addiction, the dirty poker addas in the slums of Bombay and the poor university students who are dragged into Professor Venkats experiment and end up wreaking havoc on their own lives.

The main characters prove the old saying ‘gambling is addictive,’ by completely immersing themselves into the game of wits. They fail to realize when they cross the line between testing the theory of probability and being absorbed by their own greed.

Throughout the movie, the game continues to become more and more dangerous as days go by. They reach a point when the addiction renders the participants totally helpless and incapable of making any rational decisions.

This interpretation that gambling is always bad and always evil is becoming a bit one-sided, and we wish Bollywood would take a more nuanced approach to this theme in the future.

Of course, not everyone who gambles will win huge sums of money. But not everyone will become a gambling addict either.

Sure enough, sometimes people lose and sometimes people win. And most people who gamble end up somewhere right in the middle of the spectrum, where they get to enjoy gambling as nothing but an entertaining hobby.

In any case, if you enjoy the glamor, the guts and the glory of the casino world, then Teen Patti is definitely a movie worth watching. The movie has viewers glued to the screen right till the very end.

Some might say that the conclusion of the movie was a bit too rushed through – but we will let you decide that for yourself.

For what it’s worth, we found that each scene in the movie was packed with a profound sense of thrill. Plus, the musical score by Sunidhi Chauhan, “Teri Niyat Kharab Hai” really added some extra spice to the movie!

If you’d like to dig deeper into the topic of gambling, we can assure you that it’s not something that only happens on the big screen. Although gambling is a legally contested topic in India, there is no shortage of gambling taking place in India.

From small-time gambling during festivities and family gatherings to the great floating casinos on the Mandovi River in Goa, gambling is everywhere. These days, there are even sites where Indians can find an online casino and play casino games any time they desire.
