Rajkummar Rao shines at home ground; Hansal Mehta captains well

Chhalaang Movie Review is all about a PT teacher who faces tough competition with a new coach and must prepare himself otherwise lose his job, self-respect and love. Mahinder Singh or Montu played by Rajkummar Rao is a carefree man. He roams around with his much older Masterji played by Saurabh Shukla and wakes up when the sun is already on the head. He does not have any purpose in life.

He is not very happy with his job as a PT instructor which he has got only because his father played by Satish Kaushik recommended his name to the principal played by Ila Arun. When he is not roaming around with Masterji he is the moral police for space-starved love couples. During one such patrolling he catches an old couple assuming that they are fooling around. He shames and names them by publishing their photo in a newspaper.

Unfortunately, the daughter of the couple Neelima or Neelu played by Nushrratt Bharuccha becomes the new computer teacher in the same school where Montu is the PT instructor. Montu has an instant crush on her while Neelima is very angry with him. Then like all Bollywood films we see that their hatred slowly converts into love.

However, the twist in the tale comes when a new PT coach IM Singh played by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub enters the scene. Singh is a better version of Montu with a Royal Enfield who could easily take away the job and girl Montu has. Montu then realises that he has to either upgrade his game or lose everything including his reliability.

He declares an all-sports competition against Singh which puts to test his ability to teach. The sporting action and conflict start from this point in the movie. The writers of Chhalaang including Luv Ranjan, Zeishan Quadri and Aseem Arrora do not take any leap of faith to make this movie a heart-pumping sporting film.

Chhalaang Review does not even explore the idea of a sweet love story. It only tries to fit in a love triangle. However, there are many parts in the second half which help in spicing the story. Chhalaang like every other sports film has a prep song sung by Daler Mehndi where all the underdogs prepare themselves to get ready for the big day.

Some of the areas which show the application of practical situations for giving physical training are effectively shown and quite new. However, as we do not know much about the history of players we cannot root for them well. The characters are not shown very well especially the children and more focus is laid on gender equality and women empowerment which looks forced.

There is no foot-tapping number in Chhalaang even when the movie requires it. The song Care Ni Karda comes when the movie ends. Rajkummar Rao is good as an unambitious PT teacher but his act of a small-town boy next door becomes repetitive. This is also because the stories from rural India are a major part of his filmography. His hairs also look very odd even when he is getting down and dirty in the sports field.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub fits in his role perfectly with a moustache and athletic sports teacher. Nushrratt Bharuccha is performing well with every film and is looking beautiful in the role. Bharuccha’s character as a new age girl is always the voice of reason in the film. The character artists breathe realism in the film and give a much needed comic relief to it.

Versatile actor Saurabh Shukla has complemented the film very well with Satish Kaushik, Ila Arun and a very talented actor Baljinder Kaur. She plays the role of Montu’s mother with dedication and sincerity.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta does a lot of detailing with the setting. However, the conviction in execution and writing could have made this movie a lot better than it is.  We have compiled Chhalaang Ratings from various sources to help you decide on watching the film.
